History

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. Founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University, the sorority was created to provide support, leadership development, and opportunities for service among women committed to scholarship and community impact.

As an international service organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown to include more than 390,000 initiated members and over 1,120 graduate and undergraduate chapters across the United States and several countries and territories worldwide.

The sorority's mission is built upon five enduring principles:

• Cultivating and encouraging high scholastic and ethical standards

• Promoting unity and friendship among college women

• Studying and helping alleviate issues affecting girls and women

• Maintaining a progressive interest in college life

• Providing “Service to All Mankind” 

 

Founded by a group of visionary women led by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha has maintained a legacy of leadership, sisterhood, and service for more than a century. Through educational initiatives, community service, advocacy, and lifelong membership engagement, the organization continues to positively impact communities around the world.
